His Things Are In A Box Under It

The box is by the wall under where the shelf goes.

It has been there since April. His things are in it, the ones he actually uses, so it gets opened and closed and rummaged in every day, and it gets pushed back against the wall every day, and every morning the two of you step over it on the way out.

Neither of you mentions it. He has never complained about it once, which you have noticed, and which is somehow worse than complaining.

And the shelf itself is genuinely small. Two brackets and a board. You have both brackets. You know where the drill is.

But the box has stopped being a box. It has become a thing you walk past on the way to work with a specific small feeling attached to it, and the feeling is not about carpentry.

Here is what I want to put in front of you before anything else. That room is not silent. Something is being said in there every single morning, by the arrangement of it, without either of you opening your mouth.

You are a father saying something in that room every morning, and a box on the floor has never once been the only sentence available to you.

When thou sittest in thine house

There is an instruction in Deuteronomy about teaching children, and the striking part of it is where the teaching is located.

And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. (Deuteronomy 6:7, King James Version)

When thou sittest in thine house. When thou walkest by the way. When thou liest down. When thou risest up.

Four ordinary positions, and not one of them is a solemn occasion. Sitting, walking, lying down, getting up. The whole of it takes place inside the normal movement of a household on a normal day.

Which means the teaching is not an event that gets scheduled. It is a property of how a house runs, and it is happening whether anybody has decided to do it or not.

You are teaching in that house already, and the four positions in that verse have never once required anybody to call a meeting. Deuteronomy 6:7 puts the whole thing inside sitting and walking and rising up, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in the ordinary movements of a morning.

And now the part that cuts both ways, and it is the reason this verse is the right one.

If teaching happens in the ordinary movements, then the ordinary movements are teaching something right now. The box is in the room while he rises up. It is there while he lies down. It is in the way while the two of you walk out.

You have a room that is already saying something to a boy, and a house has never once been able to say nothing at all. The Spirit of God is the one who is in that doorway every morning, and the written word locates the teaching in rising up and lying down rather than in anything anybody announces.

The sentence and the other sentence

So here is the practical part, and it is not the guilt a man expects here.

What the box says has nothing to do with whether his father is a good one. He is not a lawyer and he is not building a case. What it says is much simpler and much more ordinary. It says this is how this room is.

That is it. That is the whole lesson currently being delivered. This is how this room is, and rooms are like this, and nobody changes them.

You are delivering one sentence that a boy is not weighing against you, and what he takes from that box has never once been an opinion about his father. Deuteronomy 6:7 describes teaching by living rather than teaching by verdict, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a father from hearing an accusation where there is only a fact.

And here is what makes it worth doing something about. The other sentence is available and it is cheap.

One bracket. Not the shelf. One bracket, screwed into the wall, with him in the room. That sentence says something completely different, and it says it in about eight minutes.

You have a second sentence in your hands that costs eight minutes, and one bracket on a wall has never once needed a second one to have said something. The Spirit of God is the one who is in a room while a small job gets done badly, and Deuteronomy 6:7 counts the ordinary motion of a house as the place where everything gets taught.

Here is the assignment, and the second half of it matters as much as the first.

Put up one bracket tonight. Just one. Then stop, and do not apologize for stopping.

And have him in the room while you do it. Not helping, necessarily. Sitting on the bed, doing something on a screen, asking you questions about something unrelated. Present.

You have a boy who can be in the room for a small job, and a father working in front of his son has never once had to be good at it for the thing to count. Deuteronomy 6:7 puts the teaching in sitting and rising and walking, and the Holy Spirit is the one in that bedroom while a drill goes for ninety seconds.

You are teaching that things in this house get worked on, and the lesson has never once been the bracket itself. What a boy takes from it is that the man who lives here does the working on them, on ordinary Wednesdays, with nobody making a speech about it. Deuteronomy 6:7 sets the teaching inside the walking and the rising up, and the Spirit of God is the one in that room while it gets said.

And then stop. Genuinely stop. Put the drill down and leave the second bracket for another night, because a father who does one bracket and stops has said a thing that a father who does the whole shelf at midnight has not said.
