I Always Stop At The Same Point

It is always the same stage.

Not the same project. That is what makes it hard to see, because the projects have all been different and the rooms have been different and some of them were years apart.

But the stage is the same, and once somebody points that out it becomes obvious and slightly unpleasant. It is the part after the interesting beginning and before anything looks finished. The clearing out. The second coat. The long middle where every hour looks exactly like the hour before it.

And you have watched yourself arrive there, and you have watched yourself stop, more than once, with full awareness that it was happening.

That last part is the one that hurts. Not the stopping. The watching yourself stop and being unable to do anything about it, which feels like evidence of something.

Here is what I want to put down first. A repeatable pattern is not a character finding. It is a description of a mechanism, and mechanisms can be worked with, and characters are much harder.

You are somebody who stops at a known point, and a pattern you can predict has never once been proof of anything about your character.

The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed

There is a line in Nehemiah, in the middle of the wall being built, and it is a quotation of what the workers said.

And Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall. (Nehemiah 4:10, King James Version)

The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed.

Notice the stage they are at. The wall was begun with enormous energy and the gates had not gone up and there was no visible finish anywhere. They are in the middle.

And notice what they say about themselves. Not that they are weak people. That the strength is decayed, which is a report about a condition and not a confession about a character.

You have a report in that verse and not an admission, and a stated condition has never once been the same thing as a fault being owned. Nehemiah 4:10 records what the builders said about their own strength, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that a description rather than a charge.

And then the second half, which is the specific part. There is much rubbish.

The middle of a build produces debris. It always does. The rubble of what has been taken out is at its highest exactly when the least is visible, and that is not a sign of anything going wrong, it is what the middle looks like from inside.

You are standing in a stage that produces its own obstruction, and much rubbish in the middle has never once meant the wall was going badly. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in a half built thing, and the written word records the rubble as a plain feature of the stage rather than as a warning.

The stage has a shape and it is knowable

So here is the practical claim, and it takes this out of the realm of willpower.

That stage has properties, and they are the same every time, and they are the reason it beats people. Knowing them is most of the help available.

It produces no visible change. It takes longer than every other stage. It generates mess. And nothing in it can be shown to anybody, which means no encouragement arrives from outside for as long as it lasts.

You have been meeting a stage with known properties, and a part of the work that produces nothing to look at has never once been a measure of the person doing it. Nehemiah 4:10 names both the decayed strength and the rubbish in the same sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who puts a shape on a thing that has felt shapeless.

And here is why watching yourself stop is so much worse than stopping.

The watching adds a second event. There is the stopping, which is about a stage, and there is the observing, which produces a sentence about a self. The second one is the expensive one and it is the one that carries into the next project.

You were never producing evidence while you watched, and a person who can predict their own stopping point is a person with information rather than a fault. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps an observation from becoming a verdict, and Nehemiah 4:10 puts the words in the mouths of the builders without one word of comment on them.

And one more, because this row must be concrete rather than encouraging. Nothing here requires more persistence than you have.

You have enough for one timed session in the worst part, and getting through a stage has never once required getting through it all at once. Nehemiah 4:10 sits in the middle of a build that did go up, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in the part nobody ever describes.

One session that is only the middle

Here is the assignment and it is the opposite of what a person wants.

Do one session that is only the part you always stop at.

Not the satisfying part first to get going. Not a bit of the next stage as a reward. The boring middle, on purpose, as the whole of the session.

You have one session of the worst part available tonight, and doing the middle deliberately has never once been the same as being trapped in it. Nehemiah 4:10 names the stage honestly, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is in that room for the whole of a session with nothing to show at the end.

And here is the instruction that makes it work. Set a timer, and let the timer end the session rather than letting your own tolerance end it.

That is the whole mechanism. Every previous time, the stage ended the session, because the stage outlasts a person and always will. If a clock ends it instead, the stage has not beaten anybody. It has simply been worked at for twenty five minutes and then set down.

Twenty five minutes. Then stop, even if you could do more, because stopping while you still could is what makes the next one possible.

And there will be nothing to show at the end. Expect that. That is not a failed evening, that is a correct description of the middle.
