What It Costs Me DailyPsalm 42:5

I Thought I Was Just Low

This message is for the woman who has been treating a house shaped weight as a character shaped one, and needs the difference named before anything else

You have decided it is you.

Not in words, and not all at once. Over about a year, quietly, the working explanation for the heaviness has become that there is something the matter with you, and everything else has been arranged to fit around that conclusion.

And the conclusion is not stupid. It accounts for the evidence. You are tired. You are flat. Things that used to be easy take more out of you than they did. That is a consistent picture and it points in one direction.

Here is the only thing it does not account for, and it is worth stopping on.

It lifts when you leave the house.

Not dramatically. Not into happiness. But somewhere between the front door and the end of the road, something comes off, and it goes back on somewhere around the time you put the key in on the way home.

A weight that is about you would travel with you. This one has an address.

You are a woman carrying something with an address, and a weight that lifts when you leave the house has never once been a fact about your character.

I Thought I Was Just Low

Why art thou cast down, O my soul

There is a moment in the forty second psalm where a man stops accepting what he feels and starts questioning it, out loud, to himself.

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance. (Psalm 42:5, King James Version)

Why art thou cast down.

It is a question, and that is the whole of what makes it remarkable. He does not accept the report. He does not say I am cast down and therefore something is wrong with me. He turns around and interrogates the feeling.

And notice that he is not denying it either. The soul is cast down, that is granted, it is stated as fact. What is refused is the conclusion the feeling was carrying with it.

You have permission to question a feeling without denying it, and a heaviness has never once been entitled to explain itself. Psalm 42:5 asks the question rather than accepting the verdict, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an honest question possible in a woman who has already decided.

And the second part of the verse is where it goes, and it goes outward. Hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.

He does not answer the question by working out the cause. He answers it by directing the soul somewhere. Which is a relief, because it means the question does not have to be solved before anything improves.

You were never required to diagnose yourself before help arrived, and the asking has never once had to end in an answer to be worth doing. The Spirit of God is the one being hoped in, and Psalm 42:5 turns the soul outward rather than deeper into itself.

A weight with an address

So here is the practical claim, and it is a distinction and nothing more.

There are two kinds of heaviness and they behave completely differently, and the difference is testable.

One kind travels. It is with you at work, at your sister's house, in a parking lot, on a good day and a bad one. That kind is worth going and talking to somebody about, and if that is the kind in your life, this article is not the right article and a doctor is a good idea.

The other kind has a location. It is heavier in the back bedroom than in the kitchen. It is heavier on Sunday afternoon than on Wednesday morning, because Sunday afternoon is spent in the house. That kind is about rooms.

You have something testable in front of you tonight, and a heaviness with a location has never once been the same animal as one that follows a person. Psalm 42:5 asks rather than concludes, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes the asking safe instead of frightening.

And here is why the distinction has not been made until now, and it is nobody fault.

Nobody tests it. The heaviness arrives, it is unpleasant, and a person reaches for the nearest explanation, and the nearest explanation is always the self, because the self is the thing that is present in every single instance.

You have been reaching for the only explanation that was ever nearby, and the nearest answer has never once been the same as the true one. The Spirit of God is the one who brings a better question, and the written word shows a man doing exactly that with his own soul.

And there is one more thing, and it is the reason this row is not despair. Finding out that it is the house does not mean the house has to be fixed.

You have relief available in the naming itself, and knowing where a weight comes from has never once required removing it. Psalm 42:5 hands the soul upward rather than handing it a solution, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with a woman standing in a room finding out what it costs her.

One minute in each room, out loud

Here is the assignment and it is about eight minutes long in most houses.

Go into each room in turn. Stand there for one minute. Then say out loud whether it is heavier or lighter in there than the room you just left.

Out loud. Heavier. Lighter. About the same. That is the entire vocabulary and you do not need any more than that.

You have eight minutes and a sentence tonight, and standing in a room and saying one word has never once obliged you to change anything in it. Psalm 42:5 asks a plain question and waits, and the Holy Spirit is the one walking that house with you room by room.

Do not analyze while you are in there. Do not work out why. Do not start listing what is in each room, because the listing will pull you straight back into the old explanation.

Just stand, and feel, and say the word, and move on.

And then notice the map that just got made. Most people find two rooms carry almost all of it, and finding that out takes eight minutes and answers a question a year of thinking about yourself did not answer.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman standing in her own hallway tonight.

You are a woman carrying something with an address, and a weight that lifts when you leave the house has never once been a fact about your character. I am not telling you the back bedroom gets finished and I am not telling you the weight goes. Psalm 42:5 asks the soul a question instead of accepting its report, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who makes that question safe to ask.

And this, which is the word I actually came with:

You have been reaching for the nearest explanation for a year, and the self has never once been the true answer simply by being present at every occurrence. The Spirit of God is the one who brings a better question to a tired woman, and the written word turns the soul outward and upward rather than further into itself, which means the looking was never meant to end inside you.

One minute a room. Heavier or lighter. Out loud.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Conclusion that the matter is with me, you are not a finding and you were never once tested against anything. Psalm 42:5 says why art thou cast down, O my soul, so by the Holy Spirit I walk my own house tonight and say heavier and lighter out loud, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Weight that lifts at the end of my own street, you have an address and you were never once my character. The written word interrogates the feeling instead of taking its report, and by the Holy Spirit I stop handing you my name.
  3. Father, You showed a man questioning his own soul out loud and then turning it toward You. Your word says hope thou in God, so by Your Spirit I ask my own house the plain question tonight, one room at a time.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
