The Line Is Not Straight

You can see it from the door.

Nobody else can. That has been established, several times, by several people, and none of them were being polite, and it has changed nothing.

Because you know where it is. And knowing where it is means the eye goes there first, every single time, before it has looked at anything else in that room.

So the sequence goes like this. Walk in. Eye goes to the flaw. Four seconds of the flaw. And then the rest of the room, which by that point is being looked at by a man who has already decided how the room is.

And here is the arithmetic that nobody does. Over a year, that flaw has had perhaps four hundred seconds of your attention. The parts that came out well have had almost none, because by the time the eye gets to them the verdict is in and there is nothing left to look for.

That is not a report on the work. That is a report on a sequence of looking, and the sequence can be changed tonight.

You are a man who finished something, and one line that is not straight has never once been the whole of what is standing there.

Man looketh on the outward appearance

There is a sentence in the first book of Samuel about two ways of looking, and it is usually read about people and applies perfectly well to a wall.

For the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. (1 Samuel 16:7, King James Version)

Man looketh on the outward appearance.

The context is a man being passed over because of how he looked, and the correction being issued is about the method of looking rather than about the man doing it.

And notice that it is stated as a description. Man looketh. This is what happens. It is not presented as a sin to be repented of, it is presented as the standing habit of human sight, which needs correcting from outside because it will not correct itself.

You have a habit of sight that scripture describes as ordinary, and the eye going to the wrong thing first has never once been a moral failure. First Samuel 16:7 states the human method plainly, and the Holy Spirit is the one who supplies the other kind of looking rather than demanding it.

And the correction offered is not better willpower. It is a different seer. The LORD seeth not as man seeth, and the passage resolves by somebody else looking rather than by the man trying harder.

You were never expected to fix your own way of seeing, and the answer in that passage has never once been a man looking more carefully on his own. The Spirit of God is the one who sees differently, and First Samuel 16:7 puts the corrected sight on His side rather than on anybody else.

The sequence is the thing, not the flaw

So here is the practical claim, and it is entirely about order.

The flaw is small. Everybody who has looked at it agrees, and it looks small to the man who made it too, on a reasonable morning.

What is not small is that it is first. Being first gives it the power to frame everything that comes after it, and a thing that frames everything is not small regardless of its size.

You are dealing with a sequence and not a size, and a small flaw seen first has never once behaved like a small flaw. First Samuel 16:7 is about the method of looking rather than about what is being looked at, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can change an order that a man cannot change by deciding to.

And here is why looking away does not work, which you have probably already tried.

Telling yourself not to look at it makes it the subject. The instruction contains the thing. Nobody has ever successfully not thought about a crooked line by intending not to.

What works is having somewhere else specific to put the two minutes. Not away from the flaw. Toward something named.

You have specific things in that room that have never once had two minutes of anybody's attention, and the good parts have never once been looked at properly since the day they were done. The Spirit of God is the one who directs a look rather than forbidding one, and the written word answers a bad way of seeing with a different seer instead of a prohibition.

And one more, because this row must not turn into positive thinking. Nothing here says the flaw is not there.

You were never being asked to pretend, and looking at the rest of it has never once required anybody to stop seeing the crooked part. First Samuel 16:7 does not deny the outward appearance. It puts a second kind of sight beside it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who supplies that second kind.

Two minutes on the parts that came out right

Here is the assignment and it is deliberately specific about where the eyes go.

Stand in front of the finished work and look at the parts that came out right for two full minutes.

Use a timer. Two minutes is much longer than it sounds when you are looking at a wall on purpose.

You have two minutes available tonight for the parts of that job that have never had any, and looking at what came out right has never once been the same as pretending. First Samuel 16:7 answers one way of seeing with another, and the Holy Spirit is the one standing there for the whole two minutes.

Here is the method. Pick something specific and look at it. The join at the far end. The way the second coat covered. The corner that came out clean. Name it in your head and stay on it.

When the eye goes to the flaw, and it will, do not fight it. Let it go there, and then move to the next named thing, and carry on.

This is not an exercise in avoiding the flaw. It is giving the rest of that work the two minutes it has never had in a year, on purpose, because it will not happen by itself.

And when the timer goes, walk away. Do not finish by having one last look at the crooked line, which is the instinct and which would undo the whole two minutes.
