Starting Again Mid WayLuke 14:30

The Tools Are All Put Away

This message is for the man for whom tidying up was the real end of the project, and who now reads setting everything out again as beginning again

Everything is put away.

The tools are back in the box in the order they go in. The offcuts are stacked. The floor is swept, and the dust sheet is folded, and anybody walking in there would say this is a man who looks after his things.

And it is the reason nothing has happened since March.

Because getting set up again is forty minutes. Finding the box, getting the extension out, moving what has been stacked on the bench since, laying everything down, finding where the blade went. Forty minutes before a single useful thing occurs.

And most evenings do not have forty minutes of setup and then some work in them. Most evenings have about fifty minutes total, and a man who knows the first forty are setup does not start, because starting would mean ten minutes of work, and ten minutes of work is not worth forty minutes of getting ready.

That arithmetic is correct. That is the frustrating part. The reasoning is sound and it produces nothing.

You are a man whose setup cost is real, and putting your tools away carefully has never once been the thing that ended a project.

The Tools Are All Put Away

This man began to build

There is a sentence in Luke that gets used against people, and it is worth taking it away from whoever has been using it.

Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish. (Luke 14:30, King James Version)

This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

The first thing to say is who is speaking. That line is not the verdict of heaven. It is what the onlookers say. Jesus is quoting the mockery of the neighbors, in a passage about counting the cost before you start.

So if that sentence has been running in your head with the authority of God behind it, take the authority off it. It is a crowd talking.

You have been carrying a line that scripture puts in the mouth of onlookers, and the mockery of a crowd has never once been a judgment from God. Luke 14:30 is a quotation of what people say rather than a finding against anybody, and the Holy Spirit is the one who hands a man back the difference.

And the second thing, which is the useful half. The teaching around it is about counting the cost, and counting the cost is exactly what you have been doing.

Forty minutes of setup for ten minutes of work is a cost properly counted, and a man who declines that trade is doing precisely what the passage recommends. The problem is not that you are failing to count. The problem is that the number is wrong, and it is wrong because of how the job was left.

You are counting the cost correctly on a number that can be changed tonight, and an honest calculation has never once been the thing standing against you. The Spirit of God is the one who shows a man which figure to go after, and Luke 14:30 sits inside a passage about counting rather than a passage about shame.

The tidying was the ending

So here is the practical claim, and it is not a criticism of tidiness.

Putting everything away is a good habit and it is also, functionally, an ending. When the tools go back in the box, the project closes, and a closed project has to be reopened, and reopening has a price.

Nobody told you that. Tidiness is taught as a virtue and the cost of it is never mentioned, so a careful man ends up paying a reopening fee every time he wants twenty minutes of work.

You have been paying an ending fee that nobody ever warned you about, and putting a thing away neatly has never once been a fault in anybody. Luke 14:30 stands inside a lesson about reckoning costs, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man see a cost he was never told to look for.

And here is the fix, and it is almost embarrassingly small.

Leave something out. One tool and one material, sitting where the work is. That is it. A project with a tool lying next to it is an open project, and an open project can be worked on for eleven minutes, and eleven minutes of work is worth doing when there is no setup in front of it.

You have a way to keep a job open that costs nothing at all, and one tool left out has never once been the same as making a mess. The Spirit of God is the one who gives an ordinary practical answer to a spiritual sounding problem, and the written word puts the whole passage on the side of counting well.

And one more thing, because the shame in this row is real and it is misdirected.

The line in Luke is about a man who did not count before he started. You counted. You counted accurately. The neighbors in that verse are not describing you at all.

You were never the man in that parable, and an accurate reckoning that ended in not starting has never once been a failure to reckon. Luke 14:30 puts the mockery in the mouth of a crowd, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that crowd out of a man's own garage.

Leave one tool and one material out

Here is the assignment and it takes ninety seconds.

Take out one tool and one material and leave them out where the work is.

Just one of each. The tool you would pick up first. The material you would put your hand on next. Set them down where the job is and leave them there.

You have ninety seconds tonight and nothing else is being asked of you, and taking one tool out of a box has never once been a promise to use it. Luke 14:30 belongs to a teaching about counting, and the Holy Spirit is the one out there while a man sets two objects down and walks away.

Then do nothing with them. Do not start. Do not do ten minutes because you happen to be standing there. Walk out.

What that does is change a number. Tomorrow evening the setup cost is not forty minutes, it is nothing, because the setup already happened tonight, in ninety seconds, when there was nothing else at stake.

And if they sit there for a week untouched, that is fine, and it is not evidence of anything. A tool lying next to a job is an open door, and doors do not have to be walked through on any particular day.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man in a very tidy garage tonight.

You are a man whose setup cost is real, and putting your tools away carefully has never once been the thing that ended a project. I am not telling you the job gets finished and I am not asking you to work tonight. Luke 14:30 puts that famous sentence in the mouth of onlookers inside a teaching about counting the cost, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes the crowd out of a man's garage.

And this, which is the word I actually came with:

You have been counting accurately the whole time, and an honest number has never once been the same thing as a failure of will. The Spirit of God is the one who shows a man which figure can actually be changed, and the written word sets the whole passage on the side of reckoning well, which means your arithmetic was never the problem.

One tool. One material. Leave them out.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Voice in the crowd, you are a crowd and you were never once the verdict of heaven. Luke 14:30 puts you in the mouth of onlookers, so by the Holy Spirit I take one tool out tonight and leave it where the work is, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Forty minutes of setup, you have no authority over my evenings any more. The written word teaches counting the cost and never once shames a man for counting well, and by the Holy Spirit I change the number instead of letting the tidying be the ending.
  3. Father, You set that mockery in the mouth of a crowd and never once made it Your own. Your word puts the whole passage on the side of reckoning carefully, so by Your Spirit I leave one tool and one board out tonight, and I use neither of them.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
