The Middle Where It DiesPsalm 37:24

I Do Not Trust Myself Past This Point

This message is for the man who has stopped at this same stage so often that he now predicts his own quitting and stops early to avoid the fall

You stop before you get there now.

That is the new thing, and it is more recent than the pattern it comes from, and it deserves to be understood properly rather than added to the charge sheet.

The old pattern was this. You worked, you reached a certain stage, and at that stage the whole thing collapsed. Not dramatically. It simply stopped, and stayed stopped, and after a few months it was one more unfinished thing.

That happened often enough that you can now see it coming. And a man who can see something coming does the sensible thing, which is to not be there when it arrives.

So now the work stops earlier. Comfortably before the stage. Never quite reaching the place where the collapse happens.

And from outside it looks like the same thing. From inside it is completely different. That is not a man who gave up. That is a man protecting himself from a fall he has taken several times and remembers clearly.

You are a man who has been protecting himself, and stopping early to avoid a fall has never once been the same as not caring how it turns out.

I Do Not Trust Myself Past This Point

Though he fall

There is a line in the thirty seventh psalm about falling, and the first word of it is the one that matters.

Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand. (Psalm 37:24, King James Version)

Though he fall.

Not if. Though. The falling is granted, allowed for, built into the sentence before anything at all is said about being held.

That is an unusual way to build a promise. Most reassurance works by making the bad thing less likely. This one leaves the bad thing exactly where it is and speaks about what happens afterward.

You have a promise that grants the fall before it says one word about the holding, and a falling that is written into the sentence has never once been a thing anybody had to prevent. Psalm 37:24 says though and not if, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that an honest arrangement rather than a comfort.

And then the middle clause, which is the precise one. He shall not be utterly cast down.

Not he shall not fall. Not he shall not be cast down at all. Utterly is the word carrying the weight, and it concedes that being cast down happens, and rules out only the completeness of it.

You were never promised that it would not happen, and the word utterly has never once been an accident in that sentence. The Spirit of God is the one who upholds after the fall rather than instead of it, and the written word chose a word that concedes the fall and limits the depth.

Protecting yourself is not the same as quitting

So here is the practical claim, and the distinction is the whole of the help here.

What is happening out there is not indifference and it is not laziness. It is risk management, and it is being done by somebody who has taken the same fall repeatedly and has learned something real from it.

That is an intelligent response to genuine experience. It is simply an expensive one.

You are managing a risk and not avoiding a job, and stopping short of a stage has never once been the same act as walking away from one. Psalm 37:24 grants the fall in the first word, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can tell self protection apart from indifference.

And here is the cost, which is exactly why this row exists.

The protection works. That is the problem. You never reach the stage, so you never fall at it, so nothing ever disconfirms the prediction. The forecast goes on being correct because it is never tested.

And an untested forecast hardens into a fact about a man, and that is how this stops being about a project and starts being about a person.

You have a prediction about yourself that has never once been tested, and a forecast protected from evidence has never once earned the certainty it carries. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a test bearable, and Psalm 37:24 rules out the utterness rather than the falling itself.

And one more, and it is what makes the assignment small enough to do.

You have five minutes past the usual point available tonight, and five minutes has never once been the distance at which anything catastrophic happens. Psalm 37:24 says the LORD upholdeth him with his hand, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present at exactly the point a man has been avoiding.

Five minutes past, and write it down

Here is the assignment and it is deliberately unheroic.

Work one session five minutes past the point where you normally stop.

Five. Not through the stage. Not until it is done. Five minutes past the moment you would ordinarily put the tools down, which you will recognize instantly because you have been recognizing it for two years.

You have five minutes past the usual stopping point tonight, and going slightly further has never once required getting all the way through. Psalm 37:24 speaks about a hand upholding rather than about a road being cleared, and the Holy Spirit is the one out there for exactly those five minutes.

And then write down that you did.

One line, on a scrap or a phone. Went five past on Thursday. That is all it needs to say.

Here is why the writing matters more than the five minutes. The prediction in your head has been running unchallenged because nothing has ever been recorded against it. A written line is evidence, and one piece of evidence against a forecast is worth more than any amount of resolving to be different.

Then stop. Five and no more. Do not try to break the whole thing tonight, because a big attempt that fails feeds the forecast, and this evening is about starving it instead.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man putting his tools down early tonight.

You are a man who has been protecting himself, and stopping early to avoid a fall has never once been the same as not caring how it turns out. I am not telling you the job gets finished and I am not telling you the stage goes well. Psalm 37:24 grants the fall in its first word and rules out only the utterness, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who upholds a man afterward.

And this, which is the word I actually came with:

You have a forecast about yourself that has been protected from every piece of evidence, and a prediction that is never tested has never once earned the certainty it has. The Spirit of God is the one who makes the test small enough to survive, and the written word says though he fall rather than if he fall, which means the falling was written into the arrangement before any promise was made.

Five minutes past. Then write it down. Then stop.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Forecast that says I know what I do next, you have never once been tested and you were never once evidence. Psalm 37:24 says though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down, so by the Holy Spirit I work five minutes past the usual point tonight, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Habit of stopping early to stay safe, you have no standing in this driveway. The written word grants the fall in its first word and rules out only how far it goes, and by the Holy Spirit I put one line of evidence on paper against a thing that has never had any.
  3. Father, You said though he fall and not if he fall, and You put the falling into the sentence before You said one word about holding. Your word says the LORD upholdeth him with his hand, so by Your Spirit I go five minutes past tonight and then I stop.
