It does not feel like anything is happening.
And that feeling is the fuel. That is the thing worth understanding before anything else, because a great deal gets written about persistence and almost none of it acknowledges that most people run on the sensation of moving.
Momentum is not a metaphor. It is a real experience, and it is what makes the next session happen, and it arrives when a person can perceive that something has changed.
In the first two weeks of any project it is everywhere. Everything is new, everything shows, and every evening ends with a room that is visibly different from the room that morning.
And then it stops, entirely, not because the progress stops but because the progress stops being perceptible. The changes get smaller against the whole. The work gets finer. And a woman standing in that room at the end of an evening can detect nothing at all.
So the fuel runs out, and the sessions thin, and the whole thing is read as losing interest when what has actually happened is a measurement problem.
You are a woman who has done more than she can feel, and progress that does not announce itself has never once been progress that did not happen.

Who hath despised the day of small things
There is a question in Zechariah, asked in the middle of a rebuild, and the question is not aimed where people assume.
For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven. (Zechariah 4:10, King James Version)
Who hath despised the day of small things.
It is a question and it is pointed at an attitude rather than at a person. Somebody, somewhere, has looked at small things and decided they do not count, and the question is put to that judgment rather than to the people doing the work.
And notice the phrase. The day of small things. Not the failure of small things. A day, which is a period, which has a character and a purpose and passes.
You have a period with its own name and its own character, and a day of small things has never once been a day when nothing happened. Zechariah 4:10 puts a name on that stage rather than treating it as an absence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes the name a real thing rather than a consolation.
And look at what they are looking at when they rejoice. The plummet in the hand. A plumb line. A measuring tool.
Which means the thing that turns the day of small things into something to rejoice over is not a finished building. It is a measurement, in somebody hand, in the middle of the work.
You have been short of a measurement and not short of progress, and a plumb line has never once been the same thing as a completed wall. The Spirit of God is the one who puts a measure into the middle of a build, and Zechariah 4:10 has them rejoicing over a tool rather than over a finish.
Feeling is a poor instrument and a list is a good one
So here is the practical claim, and it is entirely mechanical.
The sensation of progress is a comparison between now and about an hour ago. That is the range the human nervous system works in, and it is an excellent range for the early stages and useless for the middle.
The middle needs a comparison between now and four months ago, and nobody can hold four months in their head at once.
You are using an instrument with the wrong range on it, and a nervous system has never once been able to compare tonight with March. Zechariah 4:10 has them looking at a measuring tool, and the Holy Spirit is the one who supplies a measure where a feeling cannot reach.
And here is what a list does that a feeling cannot.
A list has no range limit. Everything that has been done in that room since the beginning goes on it, and once it is all in one place, side by side, the comparison happens automatically and it is not a comparison you have to feel.
Most people are genuinely shocked by their own list. Not moved, not encouraged, shocked, because the list contains twenty items and the feeling contained none.
You have twenty things in that room that your own feeling has never once been able to hold at the same time, and a count has never once needed a mood to be accurate. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a plain count bearable rather than accusing, and the written word has them rejoicing over a plummet in a hand in the middle of a build.
And one more thing, because this row must not become a trick. Making the list does not manufacture momentum.
You were never being handed a feeling tonight, and a true list has never once had to produce a sensation in order to have been worth making. Zechariah 4:10 asks a question about an attitude rather than promising anybody anything, and the Holy Spirit is the one present while a woman reads out what she actually did.
List it all, then read it out loud
Here is the assignment and the second half is the half that works.
List everything that has been done in that room since it started.
Everything. Not the impressive things. The clearing, the filling, the first coat, the fixings taken out, the thing that got moved to the garage, the wall that got washed down before anything else could happen.
You have a month of work in that room that has never once been written in one place, and a thing scattered across four months has never once been able to be seen at once. Zechariah 4:10 names the day of small things, and the Holy Spirit is the one at that table while a list gets made.
Include the things that feel too small. Especially those. The small things are the whole of what this stage is made of and they are exactly what the feeling cannot register.
Then read the list out loud.
You have a voice that makes each item take its own second, and an eye skimming down a page has never once been able to hear anything. Out loud is not decoration, because reading silently lets the eye skim, and skimming is the same instrument that failed in the first place. Zechariah 4:10 has them see the plummet in the hand, and the Spirit of God is the one present while a list gets read out to nobody.
Then put the list down and go to bed. There is no session tonight. This evening is a measurement and nothing else.
So here is what I believe is going out over a woman standing in a half done room tonight.
You are a woman who has done more than she can feel, and progress that does not announce itself has never once been progress that did not happen. I am not telling you the room gets finished and I am not telling you the momentum comes back. Zechariah 4:10 asks who has despised the day of small things and points the question at an attitude rather than at anybody working, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who puts a measure into the middle of a build.
And this, which is the word I actually came with:
You have been using an instrument that cannot see past an hour, and a nervous system has never once been able to compare a Tuesday in September with a Tuesday in March. The Spirit of God is the one who supplies a measure where the feeling cannot reach, and the written word has them rejoicing over a plummet in a hand, which means the tool in the middle was always meant to be the thing worth seeing.
Write it all down. Read it out loud. No session tonight.
Declare this over yourself
- Feeling that nothing is happening in that room, you are an instrument with the wrong range and you were never once a report on the work. Zechariah 4:10 says who hath despised the day of small things, so by the Holy Spirit I write the whole list tonight and read it out loud, in the name of Jesus.
- Thought that I am doing something wrong, you have no standing at this table. The written word names the day of small things as a real day with a real character, and by the Holy Spirit I stop asking a feeling to measure four months.
- Father, You had them rejoice over a plumb line in somebody hand in the middle of a build. Your word says who hath despised the day of small things, so by Your Spirit I count what is actually done tonight and I read it out loud.
Zechariah 4:10
