The List Is Not A Charge Sheet

Read the first three lines of it and listen to your own voice.

Fix the gate. Finish the shelf. Sort out the back room.

Those are jobs. Written down like that they are neutral, and anybody else reading them would hear a list of small tasks and nothing else at all.

That is not what you hear.

What you hear is: you never fixed the gate. You did not finish the shelf. The back room is still like that. And every line has a second sentence underneath it that is not written down anywhere and has never been spoken by anybody, and the second sentence is about you rather than about the gate.

So the list has two parts. The written part, which is jobs, and the unwritten part, which is charges. And the unwritten part is the reason the list has become unreadable.

Nobody goes and reads a charge sheet on a Tuesday evening in order to decide what to do with an hour.

You are a man holding an inventory, and a list of undone things has never once been a list of charges against you.

There is therefore now no condemnation

There is a sentence at the start of the eighth of Romans, and the word in the middle of it is the one that does the work.

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. (Romans 8:1, King James Version)

There is therefore now no condemnation.

Now. Not eventually. Not when things are in better order. Now, which is a word about the present moment, including this one, including the state the house is currently in.

And condemnation is a legal word. It is the pronouncement at the end of a case. What is being said is that the pronouncement is not coming, and that it is not coming now rather than at some point in the future when the list is shorter.

You have a present tense with no condemnation in it, and the state of a house has never once been able to alter what that sentence says. Romans 8:1 puts the word now at the front of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a fact about tonight.

And notice what is absent. There is no condition about performance anywhere in that clause. No amount of anything has to be finished first, and no list has to be shorter, and nothing about a gate or a shelf appears in the sentence at all.

You were never going to be arraigned over a back room, and the state of a hallway has never once been admitted as evidence in that sentence. The Spirit of God is the one who holds that present tense open, and the written word says now rather than saying when.

Two lists, and only one of them exists

So here is the practical claim, and it is a separation.

There are two lists in that house. One is written down and has fourteen items on it, and it is an ordinary inventory of ordinary jobs.

The other is not written down anywhere. It has no author. It appeared gradually, it is about a man rather than about a house, and it gets read aloud by nobody, silently, every time the real list is picked up.

You have a second list that nobody wrote and nobody can produce, and an unwritten charge has never once been a charge anybody actually made. Romans 8:1 speaks about condemnation, which is a pronouncement, and the Holy Spirit is the one who notices when nobody has pronounced anything.

And here is the mechanism that keeps them stuck together, which is worth naming because it can be interrupted.

Reading silently lets both lists run at once. The eye takes in the written line and the second sentence arrives in the same half second, underneath, in the same voice, and there is no gap anywhere in which to separate them.

Reading out loud cannot do that. A voice can only say one thing at a time.

You have a mouth that can only carry one list, and a line said out loud has never once been able to carry its own second sentence with it. The Spirit of God is the one who separates two things that have been arriving together, and Romans 8:1 puts no condemnation in the present tense where a man is actually standing.

And one more, and it is the mercy in this row. The jobs are still there afterward.

You were never being asked to pretend the list is empty, and an inventory has never once stopped being real by ceasing to be an accusation. Romans 8:1 removes the condemnation and leaves everything else exactly where it is, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that distinction hold in an ordinary kitchen.

Read it out loud, flat

Here is the assignment and the manner of reading is the whole of it.

Read the list out loud, one line at a time, in a flat voice.

Flat. The way somebody reads out a list of names at the start of a meeting. One, then the next, then the next. No weight on any of it and no pause after any item.

You have a voice that can read a line without adding anything to it, and a flat reading has never once been a way of pretending. Romans 8:1 says there is now no condemnation, and the Holy Spirit is the one at that table while a man reads fourteen ordinary lines out loud.

You have a list that is fourteen jobs long and has never once been read as fourteen jobs, and a line read at pace has never once had room for a second sentence underneath it. Fix the gate. Finish the shelf. Sort out the back room. Next line. Next line. Romans 8:1 puts the no condemnation in the present tense, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps a pace steady in a kitchen.

Do not stop on any of them. Do not let one land. If you catch yourself slowing down on an item, that is the second list arriving, and the answer is to keep the pace and go to the next line.

Read all of them. Then put the paper down.

And notice what the list sounded like. Most people report that it sounded like jobs, which it is, and that it sounded like that for the first time in a long while.

Then do nothing else tonight. This is not a session. It is a list being read as what it is.
