I Am Waiting To Learn How First

Nine evenings on learning how. None on doing it.

That is the count in a great many houses and nobody ever takes it, because every single one of those evenings was a good evening. Something was learned. There is more understanding in your head about this job than there was in March, and that is not nothing.

And the job has not moved.

Here is what makes this so hard to catch from inside. Preparing feels exactly like responsibility. It is what a careful person does. Nobody has ever been criticized for wanting to understand a thing before attempting it.

But somewhere in the last few months the preparing stopped being a stage and became the activity. And the qualified version of you, the one who will finally be ready to do this properly, has been scheduled for a day that has not yet arrived and will not arrive on its own.

You are a woman who already knows enough for tonight, and preparing to be qualified has never once been the same as doing the work.

Boast not thyself of to morrow

There is a proverb about tomorrow that is not really about arrogance, and reading it as a warning against boasting misses the whole of it.

Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth. (Proverbs 27:1, King James Version)

Thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.

That is the reason clause and it is doing all the work. The instruction is not about pride. It is about a piece of information nobody has, which is what tomorrow contains.

And a person who plans to be ready tomorrow is doing exactly the thing the proverb describes. Not boasting, in any ordinary sense. Simply spending a day nobody has been given yet.

You have been drawing on a day that has never once been issued to anybody, and a plan to be ready tomorrow has never once been a safe place to put a job. Proverbs 27:1 gives the reason as ignorance of what a day brings, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that an honest limit rather than a threat.

And the shape of it is gentle, which is worth noticing. It does not say tomorrow will not come. It says you do not know what it will bring, which leaves the future entirely open and only removes it as a place to store things.

You were never told tomorrow would fail you, and an unknown day has never once been the same as a bad one. The Spirit of God is the one who holds the future without handing it over, and the written word withholds the information rather than issuing a warning.

The qualified version lives in a day nobody has

So here is the practical claim, and it is where the article turns.

The person who is going to do this job properly does not exist yet and is not scheduled to. She lives on the far side of some amount of further understanding that has never been specified.

Nobody has ever written down how much would be enough. That is worth sitting with for a second. There is no threshold anywhere. No amount of learning has been named as the amount that ends the learning.

You have a qualification with no requirements written on it, and an unspecified standard has never once been a standard anybody could reach. Proverbs 27:1 removes tomorrow as a place to store a thing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings a job back into an evening that actually exists.

And here is the second thing, and it is the more useful half.

What you know now is enough to do it badly. That is not an insult and it is not a compromise. It is a statement about a threshold, and the threshold for doing a thing badly is far lower than the threshold for doing it well, and the badly done version is the only one that can happen tonight.

You have enough in your hands tonight to do it badly, and a thing done badly has never once been a thing that did not get done. The Spirit of God is the one present in unskilled work, and the written word takes tomorrow off the table without asking anybody to be more than they are.

And one more, which is the piece nobody says out loud. Doing it badly teaches more in twenty minutes than reading teaches in nine evenings.

You were never going to learn this from reading, and information has never once been able to do what a mistake does. Proverbs 27:1 puts the day back where it belongs, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present when somebody does a thing for the first time and gets it wrong.

Do it badly and look nothing up

Here is the assignment and the second half is the one that makes it work.

Do the job badly tonight with what you already know.

Not well. Badly. Go in with the understanding you currently have, which is more than you think and less than you want, and do the thing.

You have enough understanding tonight to make a start that is not very good, and a poor first attempt has never once been worth less than a ninth evening of reading. Proverbs 27:1 takes tomorrow away as a storage place, and the Holy Spirit is the one in that room while somebody does a thing they are not ready for.

And here is the rule. Do not look anything up while you are doing it.

Not once. Not a quick check. Not two minutes on a phone to be sure about the order of something. That is the preparing coming back in through the side door, and it will eat the evening exactly the way it has eaten the last nine.

When you do not know something, guess, and carry on, and find out whether the guess was right by what happens.

Some of it will come out wrong. That is not the failure condition of this exercise, it is the content of it. Every wrong bit is a thing you now know in a way that reading has never once managed to give you.
